A GREAT HONOUR FOR TAMILS IN NAVI MUMBAI
Navi Mumbai Tamil Sangam deserves all praise for the way they function and do a world of good to the language of Tamil in general and the Tamil culture in particular. Having the statue of Thiruvalluvar at the entrance of the Tamil Sangam House in Navi Mumbai, the Association is providing the taste of Tamil from the doorsteps. The yearly programmes during Pongal mark the beginning of the New Year. The harvesting season begin and the Tamil people celebrate this occasion in a grand way. With 4 days of activities, the Tamil community of Navi Mumbai assemble at the hall and share lunch with 28 items as the servings on the plantain leaves. With Tamil New Year's day falling on 14th April every year and which is the birthday of Dr. Ambedkar Tamilians enjoy the holiday with much fan fare and fun programmes. Competitions on Thirukural taking place to enrich the knowledge of Tamil and to remind Tamil community about the two line rhymes of Thiruvalluvar with 1330 couplets of them written in various chapter and which coincides with out real life happenings. Other than the Thirukkuṛaḷ, Thiruvalluvar is alleged to be the author of two Tamil texts on medicine, Gnana Vettiyan and Pancharathnam; although many scholars claim that they were by a later author with the same name, since they appear to have been written in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Thirukkural is one of the most revered ancient works in the Tamil language. It is considered a 'common creed', providing a guide for human morals and betterment in life. Thirukkural has been translated into several languages, including a translation into Latin by Constanzo Beschi in 1730, which helped make the work known to European intellectuals. Tamil Sangam doing its best to bring Tamil Culture to the young generation and they start the functions with Marathi prayer and Tamil Prayer to give equal status to both mother tongue and Marathi culture. Now it is official that City Tamil Sangam is the best in the country and as the residents of city's Tamil community we feel proud about it. Navi Mumbai Tamil Sangham has made the city proud by winning the global award for " The Best Tamil Sangham of India " in the World Tamil Literary conference held in Maldives.
