PAES WAVES MAGIC WAND

Leander Paes has eased past the milestone of his 40th birthday, made a car wreck of a Bollywood movie and overcome brain surgery, but nothing beats his 20-year love affair with New York. This is Paes' 20th year as a professional at the US Open, a tournament where he had already been a junior champion in 1990 and where he learned to grow up faster than other boys his age. It was a process encouraged by his father Vece, a 1972 Olympic Games bronze medalist with the Indian hockey team. The fourth seeded Indo-Czech pair demolished the second seeded Austria-Brazilian pair 6-1 in 6-3 in one hour and 12 minutes at Arthur Ashe stadium. It was a perfect climax for Paes and Stepanek, who came into the US Open with title in Winston Salem Open, as they won their second major title together, having won Australian Open last year. It was third US Open title for 40-year-old Paes and the previous two had also come with Czech partners. In 2006, the Indian won with Martin Damm and in 2009 with Lukas Dlouhy. Last year at the US Open, Paes had ended runner-up with Stepanek, losing to Bryan brothers. Now Paes has 14 major titles in his cupboard, including six mixed doubles trophies. Stepanek has two Grand Slam titles, both with Paes. It was one of the most lopsided title matches as Peya and Soares failed to put up a fight. They had no clue whatsoever on how to counter the rampaging Indo-Czech combine. Kudos to Paes and his partner for the stupendous win.

Wrestling wrested back
roller coaster ride for wrestling in Olympics
Wrestling completed an unprecedented Olympic comeback, reclaiming its spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after beating bids from rivals squash and baseball/softball in an International Olympic Committee vote. Wrestling, which featured in the ancient Olympics and in every modern Games apart from 1900, had been surprisingly taken off the Games in February as the IOC looked to refresh its sports programme. A delighted international wrestling federation (FILA) president Nenad excited over the news that Wrestling is back.  Sunday's result marks a sensational turnaround for the sport, which overhauled its rules, administration, gender equity and operations following its shock exclusion. Wrestling, which had received glowing support from IOC members who were stunned by the Executive Board decision in February, after its changes, won an outright majority of votes in the first round. The sport got 49 of 95 votes, with baseball/softball earning 24 and squash landing 22 votes from the IOC members. The result was crushing news for both of the others sports that have been trying to win a spot in the Games for as much as a decade. Baseball and softball, Olympic sports until the 2008 Beijing Games, hoped for a return to the Olympic fold while squash, the only one not to have featured in the Olympics was making its third consecutive bid after 2005 and 2009.

Wrestling was reinstated into the Olympic programme for the 2020 and 2024 Games, beating baseball/softball and squash after the ancient sport underwent sweeping reforms since being provisionally dropped in February. Wrestling obtained a majority of 49 votes in a secret ballot among 95 members of the International Olympic Committee after all three sports had made a 20-minute presentation. Baseball/softball, not on the programme since 2008, got 24 votes. Squash, bidding to become a new Olympic sport, had to settle for 22. Wrestling was dropped by the IOC executive board in February 2013, but got into a shortlist with the other two in order to get back into the Games through widespread reform and lobbying from many countries including an unlikely Russia-Iran-U.S. alliance. The vote came after a proposal from Canadian member Dick Pound was rejected to postpone the decision for five months until the Session ahead of the Sochi Winter Games in order to allow a new sport into the programme. Earlier, the IOC approved the 25 core sports at Summer Games with a 77-16 majority. Rugby sevens and golf will be added in 2016 and wrestling now brings the number of sports back to the maximum 28. Baseball/softball lobbied with being played by 65 million people around the world, and with black-and-white footage of legendary players Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig for a return after being dropped following the 2008 Games. But wrestling eventually won and will also benefit from large income through the IOC which distributes a large chunk of its earnings to the sports federations competing in summer and winter Games.

50 years of viewing Cricket matches live from the Stadium-C.K. Subramaniam's cricketing experience

Cricket matches have been a part and parcel of my life for the last 50 years as I venture out into a new era of IPL cricket.    I watched the first cricket match of my illustrious career of watching matches live from the Stadium in the year 1961 at the Corporation Stadium, Madras and my love affair with cricket has continued ever since. The first match I watched was between India and Pakistan and the last one between Mumbai Indians and  Pune Warriors at the DY Patil Stadium, Nerul.  I have witnessed how the game has changed in last 50 years. I have seen it all, the madness, commercialism and the actual game of cricket and I recount it to you in the exiting game of cricket over the last 5 decades.  In the year 2011 the game, the rules and the method of playing has changed drastically but the interest to see matches has never changed. I can see it on all five days to see test match cricket and at the same time would like to see Twenty-20 cricket at its best.  I saw the the boring series between India and Pakistan in the year 1961 on a Pongal Day and I was not able to make out the players from a distance but took a few snaps from my seat in the stands through my KODAK camera.  The players were looking just like toys and I was not familiar with the players. As a student from Chennai I could not make out the difference between India, the Home Team and Imitiaz Ahmed, the Pakistani wicket-keeper and opening batsmen of yesteryear's. When Imitiaz was batting I thought it was Team India batting as I understood from the running commentary. At present I am writing about the game for National dailies, local papers, International Magazines and Weekly Magazines.  My interest in the game never dies and I eat cricket, sleep cricket and die for the game I like most.
As a regular to matches in Chennai, then in Delhi and now in Mumbai, I enjoy the game very much sitting and seeing from the Stadium. In India as a keen cricketer and cricket fan you will have the option to see matches from square leg view, whereas people does not much about the game see from the Pavilion ticket.  That is the saddest part in present day cricket and most of the spectators on the ground does not know much about the basics of the game leave alone knowing the finer points of game of cricket.  I preserved the tickets of most of the matches seen by me in the Stadium including the last one in this year.  Cricket Tickets will be my caption if I write a book on My Cricketing Days.
The key players I come across in the last 50 years include, Hanif Mohammed, the greatest opening batsman of all time and the eldest of three brother Mushtaq Mohammed and Sadiq Mohammed.  But my memory lingers around the leg-spinner of yesteryear's Intikhab Alam, the present Manager cum coach of Pakistani side.  I still cherish the memory of Mohammed Hussain picking the ball with the help of a shoe tap in his follow through as fast bowlers never like to pick up the ball by bending their backs.  The greatest of all-rounders Gary Sobers hit a purple patch in my memory.  He was six men rolled into one. He can bowl the new ball and later on turn to left arm spin, bat down the order and still score big hundreds with his calculative hitting, Captain the side, and field at both slip for the new ball bowlers and turn to short leg when Lance Gibbs turn his arm with off-spin.  It was a treat to watch Gary at his best in India.  Tony Lewis played his first test match as captain for England and in Ferosha Kotla Delhi he made a mark with John Leaver swung the old ball to a great effect. He batted as well to help the tail to wag and become Man of the Match in his first International match is fresh in my mind.  The quick reflexes of Sriniwas Venkatraghavan taking a blinder at second slip of the blades of Barry Wood of the bowling of Bhagwat Chandrasekher was a treat to watch live from the stands. Pat Pocock was turning the ball square at Chepauk on the last day and Indian won the close match with Salim Durraini obliging his fans with big six. In 1975, Vivian Richards rocked DDCA ground with his big hitting.  However, Richards was caught behind by Farookh Engineer of S. Venkatraghavan for 12 but the umpire thought it otherwise and the Master Blaster made a workman like 192.  The series was locked at 2-2 and in the final test at Mumbai Clive Llyod made a double hundred (242) and made India to surrender the series in a six day test match.  In 1977-78 series, John Leaver applied Vaseline to get the old ball reverse swing and help England achieve an unassailable 3-0 lead in a five match test series under Tony Greig against India.  Greig praised Indian umpires saying "Indian umpires are the best in the world" and thus made them fail to oversee the application Vaseline even from close quarters.  But the best of the best test match was the one between Australia and India at Chennai in 1986.  The match ended in a tie in the penultimate ball of the match.  I was an eye witness to the tie match as I sat on all five days in the stands to witness history.  Two sportive declaration and the double century of Dean Jones helped to see a close finish.  Kapil Dev fought tooth and nail to accept a big target but Shastri foolishly took a single to expose Mannider Singh to face last two balls and the left arm spinner was out palpably our LBW of Matthews and the umpire Vikram Raju was fair enough to hand the decision in favour of Australians. Cricket is a funny game and one should have the patience and perseverance to play the game at the highest level. Srikkanth scored a scintillating hundred against the Australians on the first day of the test match and did not disappoint his fans at Chennai after State Government declared holiday to witness a quick fire innings. Srikkanth became captain but could not last long after the curtailed tour of Pakistan.
Azharuddin's raise and fall was inevitable during the 1996 World cup semi-final. At Mumbai we lost to Australians by 16 runs after Sachin Tendulkar foolishly lost his wicket to wide ball from Mark Waugh getting out stumped.  The writing was on the wall thereafter.  When Azhar got out cheaply I made a sarcastic comment stating that the captain had gone along with Sangeetha Bijalani, the crowd appreciated my comment and said WELL SAID UNCLE. The year 2000 was traumatic as betting charges plagued Indian cricket. The Mumbai match saw India losing the initiative and losing the seires 0-2 to Hansie Cronje side.  Again, when Australians made short work of India at Mumbai, with Matthew Hayden and Gilchrist making merry of weak Indian attack a ten wicket defeat was on the cards.  But when they came back to India again after winning the series 0-2, the Mumbai match saw wickets fell like nine pins and despite weather preventing more than half days play on the opening day the match was over on the third day with India achieving a consolation win by narrowest margin. One day matches attracted more viewers than test matches and the demand for tickets increased to a great extent.  There is no special tickets for senior citizens or for Umpires and scorers in Mumbai. So it is difficult to slog it out in the stands after achieving the age of 60.  Then the next option available is seeing shortest form of the game T-20 cricket. As a veteran I could see Mumbai Indians vs Deccan Chargers in the first edition and more recently the one sided Mumbai Indians vs Pune Warriors match at Navi Mumbai.
The journey of seeing matches live at the stadium lasted for 50 years but the enthusiasm is not lost even after seeing matches for half a century.  The possession of tickets of all the matches is for posterity so that I can show it to my grandsons about my all time achievement.  The search for seeing more matches in the Stadium will go on for ever.  "Cricket lovely Cricket" is true and seeing the matches in the Stadium is really a treat for cricket lovers like me. The time is running fast and I am ready to see Mumbai Indians coming to the final of IPL and wish to see the final from the Pavilion at Wankhede Stadium in the 51st year of seeing crickets matches live from the Stadium.  Cricket is a passion and I loved to see the games live Stadium even at the age of 100. That's indeed a treat to watch and there is no doubt about it.

GANPATI FESTIVAL COMMENCED FROM TODAY
Noise pollution is causing innumerable problems during this Diwali Festival season.  Despite clear cut instruction to reduce noise levels, some citizen overdo things and create hindrance to patients, children and seniors in the society. This Diwali festival saw the noise levels reaching a new high and the people in the Metro will have to bear the noise level reaching a new high with bursting of loud fire crackers. Two citizens who complained about noise pollution were threatened and one of them even thrashed despite the presence of policemen.   Another major problem is the smoke emanated from the fire crackers in the city during Diwali festival. Noise levels reached a new high,  which may be defined as displeasing human sound that disrupts the activity or happiness of other humans in a city.   A person exposed to such noise for a long time may grow deaf.  Those who live in cities are affected by several ailments that include vegetative vascular dystonia, heart failure, dyspepsia and head aches. It is better to cover the face when driving a vehicle through a high way. Noise pollution or unwanted poisonous smoke is yet another form of environmental disturbance.  Noise pollution is dangerous for human life.  It affects the brain and prolonged exposure to noise may cause blood vessels to contract, sometimes resulting in hypertension.  Thus it can be said  that pollution of any kind causes serious damage to man, animals birds aquatic life, crops and vegetation.  Diwali time is over now it is time to reduce noise levels.
SyndicateBank's Official quarters at Sector 17 Vashi, Dhanashreya Officer's Welfare Association celbrated Ganpati Festival for the 16th year this time.  On Sunday morning it all started with Venkatesa Suprabhadam and ended with Mantra Pushpam.

UNITY IN DIVERSITY

SUCCESS     STORY
The Syndicate Bank Officer's Quarters (Dhanashreya) shortly called DOWA at Sector 17 Vashi is a classic example of unity in diversity.  There is no segregation on the basis of caste or creed among the over 100 plus officers staying in the quarters.  The Ganpathi Festival was the time to rejoice and get the blessings of Lord Ganesh.  Aarti will be performed on all  7 days  both in the mornings and evenings.  Women used to take very active part.

Incidentally, there is a women's wing of Dhanashreya, which is working for the general welfare of the resident.  The evening aarti would be followed by cultural activities arranged by the resident officers in a very planned and systematic way. Chief Guest is called to distribute prizes for the Best Performers.  Both Young and old participate in these activities. Once I had the opportunity to perform on the stage with a nursery rhyme starting with " Johnny Johnny Yes Pappa " to keep the young children amazed. When I attracted their attention, I simply played " Jack and Jill Went up the hill to fetch a pale of water " in carnatic tune, followed by Punjabi, Hindustani and western music.  I won the applause and accolades which I never forget during every Ganesh Festival.  Some of the prizes are sponsored by individuals to keep the children encouraged all the time.

Community lunch is also arranged on Sunday after the culmination of Vishnu Sahasranamam by men, LalithaSahasranamam by ladies followed by Satyanarayan Puja.  Officers arranged to prepare lunch and served them to all residents along with prasadams in a very well planned way.  It is indeed a grand show of strength at DHANASHREYA.  The neighbouring buildings admired the co-operation and togetherness all these years.

EDUCATION LOANS BOON OR BANE

According to the data compiled by the Indian Bank's Association (IBA), the data collected from 50 banks show the findings of the survey in a clear cut manner.  The statistics clearly shows that there is decrease in the loan amount per student by 32%.  Thus, while the number of students who took loans went by 50000, the funds sisbursed by Bank's towards student leans fell by more that Rs.30000 crore in the year 2011-12Getting an education was a problem in the past but now getting an education loan has become comparatively easy.  Student, who is aspiring to go for higher education should come to know various requirements needed to get aEducation loan.  One should know the extent of loan available and what expenses are covered under the loan scheme.  The main thing is that now-a-days Banks insist for collateral security or a guarantor for the Bank loan. Care should be taken to note that Security by way of mortgage is needed for theeducation loan.  A third party guarantee is also needed to cover the loan.  One should also ensure to get a flexible repayment option apart from low interest rate for the loan.  No repayment penalty is to be levied if the loan instalment is paid in advance.  It is needless to have minimum or no collateral required and the repayment should start once the candidate applied for the loan get an appointment.  Education loans by their own way are very risky because repayment is generally dependent on sufficient increase in income generation after the completion of the course. Globally, Education Loans are supported by the Governments because, they create qualified human capital for the country concerned. The number of Indian students going for the loans in 2011-12 is 8.6 lakh and the total funds disbursed by Bank's in 2010-11 Rs.11200.53 crore and that shows decrease of 28%.  It is time to give more education loan by Banks.
Paying for personality development

Personality Development is a part and parcel of present day curriculum. Most of the organizations do not look just for the goal setting of candidates in the recruiting  interviews but also want to know if they are passionate and clear about their goal.  Goals and role clarity requires the candidate to be well read in general knowledge and have adequate industry knowledge.  If the resume highlights the candidates potential around these two issues, the chances of securing placement are high. Match your aptitude and skills with our interest, personality and values.  One should have good aptitude to get a decent job in a corporate Company.  The activities you are good at, such as writing computer programming and teaching. Your interests should be exhibited in a clear cut way.  What you enjoy doing for instance, reading, playing sports, hanging out with friends, listening to music etc. Personality development play a pivotal role.  A persons individual traits, motivational drives, needs and attitudes.  Apart from this one should know the value of things to follow.  The things that are importance to you like achievement, status and autonomy.
Personality development is part and parcel of present day curriculum.  Healthy body and healthy mind is required to keep the body fit and the attire comes to aid to give a decent and presentable appearance. One should have sufficient time to have cake and eat it too. Even though you may handsome enough but still if you are lethargic, you pay little or no interest for wearing attractive dresses. The casuals come in the way of office goers. One should practice regular morning walk and go to the Gym. if time permits to bring the body to shape. One should not be apparently lazy to shave or oil your hair. Ladies take much care and go to beauty clinics to get a presentable look. At the same time men are careless and they feel shy to dye the hair.  One good turn can change your life overnight and for which good  appearance is a must. Wearing tie will add to best dress code.

Public Transport  a scare for Women

Women commuters not only experienced inconvenience in travelling through the public transport system but they also face the ordeals of molestation, Chain snatching, eve teasing and even rape. If travelling by train is a tough task, travelling through bus is still worse.  Bus conductors really act rude with male passengers resulting in huddle during the busy time in the morning. Passengers need to tender exact change to the conductors to avoid confrontation and at the same time conductors should also come to the passenger to issue tickets and in some cases need to part with change if the passengers could not give the correct change.  Only Air-conditioned buses plying within the city provide reasonable service as they charge heavily. The conductor-passenger relations should be maintained harmoniously avoiding trouble while travelling. Other transport system like Autos and Taxis need to be improved and the drivers should take the passengers to any destination and never ask extra over and above the meter reading.  Rude behavior should go and they need to provide best services and keep the passengers happy all the time. Railways is the cheapest mode of travel and in Mumbai most of the people use the support system to reach every nook and corner of the city.  But the helpline numbers are there for the namesake and not working all the time adding fuel to the fire. During day time also women passengers are scared of travelling in first class and empty bogies in different routes and they generally travel by general coach to avoid trouble.  Had security being provided to the women commuters, they can take advantage of the protection and travel even during lean hours. As a handicapped person I used to struggle standing on the pathway of local trains and when I tried to go inside,  co-passengers block my way crushing my Varicose affected leg from all sides.  by chance if I go near a seat no one gets up to provide me a seat. If the position in general compartment is bad, the treatment meted out in first class is still worse. To improve the position frequency of trains should improve and the trains should come to the station on time.

SHAKTI MILLS AREA - A RAPE TRAP

With one more report from a 19 year old girl about the alleged rape, Shakti Mills area has become a rape trap for women passing through that area. So it happens in this spot at least once in 15 days and only few cases are reported to the Police. Rag Pickers go to such isolated places to get good collection of waste and those people are taken advantage by the culprits.  It is indeed a sad state of affairs in the metro city of Mumbai.  Chilling call from Shakti Mills reveal  that it is just part and parcel and this area can be called Porn Area. Regular offenders rarely get caught and they repeat the act again and again without the interference of the Police department. Monsters made good on number of occasions in the same vicinity and the place was meant for their illegal activities.  All the offenders were serial offenders and they have bad track record.  When they were caught red handed all their activities came to a halt for the time being.  The way they communicated to the friends to join the party after the girl was caught in their rape web shows how professionals they were and made photo journalist their prey and tried to call more friends to commit the act.  This type of alarming situation gives the felling that everything goes fine with the poor law and order situation in the Metro. Unless some drastic measures taken in fast track court and severe punishment handed over to the culprits , such cruel act will continue for ever.

Ironically Wisden played 187 first class matches and today is his 187th birthday

As a cricketer, cricket enthusiast, cricket umpire, Cricket coach and Cricket Statistician I felt very happy to see Google marks John Wisden's Birthday with a doodle.  It was a fine gesture on the part of Google to honor a cricket historian, who spend most of his time making records come in the form of an Almanack and succeeded also in sporting field. In any other circumstance, laying claim to having bowled all ten batsmen in an innings would be plenty of reason to push a cricketer into the pantheon of the game's history. But in the case of one particular gentleman, his biggest contribution to the sport was a book. That man was John Wisden, and the book, the famous Wisden Cricketer's Almanack. Today, 187 years ago, on September 5, 1826, John Wisden was born in Brighton, Sussex. A keen cricketer, he was once termed by Fuller Pilch, the greatest batsman ever known until the appearance of WG Grace, as the finest allrounder of his day. Wisden's ten bowled dismissals in an innings came for North against South in 1850, but it was the almanack he published in 1864 that earned him worldwide recognition. It happened the year after he retired from first-class cricket and the WAC has appeared every year since and is regarded as the bible for cricket followers.

The first edition of the almanack consisted of 112 pages and detailed the 1863 cricket season, but also listed abstruse canals and winners of the English Derby. History reveals that there were three or four similar books at the time, but the WAC is the only publication that stood the test of time. Even today it has cult status. The famous canary yellow cover is recognised the world over, and hardcore cricket enthusiasts still pour through the yearly release despite the accessibility of the Internet.
My compilation of record on the Great Don Bradman is placed on record in Bradman's Brawl Museum in Adelaide.  As a member of the Statistical Association of India, I feel proud to be part of the such an initiative in India.

Ganpati Utsav is being celebrated in a grand manner and NMMC is trying to ensure an
Eco-friendly festival by setting up immersion ponds at different
locations in an around Navi Mumbai.  So far, five such ponds have been
set up, including one at K O P R I   G A O N. Once should worship and
Celebrate Ganpathi Festival in the most peaceful way.  Immersion of
idolsin the ponds is a nuisance and the water gets contaminated with
paint, oil and other chemicals. Thus the water is becoming useless.
The living things like fish inside the water could not survive long in
this environment.  We are at a loss, losing precious specimen of
fishes inside the water. If consume contaminated water, you get all
the health hazards and leads to blindness as well.  Another cause of
worry during the Ganpathi Festival is the noise pollution.  Pandals
having loud speakers in the satellite city are blowing hard and the
sound made the people go deaf.

Noise pollution or unwanted sound is yet another form of environmental
disturbance.  Noise pollution is dangerous for human life.  It affects
the brain and prolonged exposure to noise may cause blood vessels to
contract, sometimes resulting in hypertension.  Thus it can be said
that pollution of any kind causes serious damage to man, animals birds
aquatic life, crops and vegetation. With added colour to the water due
immersion we face great cause for worry. Eco-friendly methods can save our ponds. Let us save earth from dying and allow the people to have a peaceful living during the festive season.

wastage of money should be avoided by reality show producers

I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND THE WAY MONEY IS WASTED IN ADVERTISEMENT

I could not understand the way money is wasted with first page coverage of the commencement of Kaun Banega Crorepathi.  If Amitabh Bachchan is having so much charisma in small screen then there is no need of such big advertisement and spending lot of money for a TV show.  The same amount of money spent on full pages advertisement can be used for a noble cause like rehabilitation of the destitute, physically handicapped persons and of course Senior Citizens.  Amitabh as a senior citizen must have given the hint to make use of the money for a noble cause and not just waste it for a day's advertisement in news dailies. The just commenced KBC episode in SONY TV channel may attracted many with high TRP among all the TV shows. The anchor Amitabh Bachchan did make it more lively with his initial introduction and the way he conducts the show with a difference is worth watching. It is indeed worth watching Kaun Banega Crorepathi in Sony Entertainment Television  from Friday to Sunday at 8.30 pm. Amitabh is doing the job of the anchor in an imitable way.  The opening of the programme with Amitabh Bachan at his best is a treat to watch.  But I wonder how the major sponsors Cadbury, Idea, Akash, Axis Bank, CEAT, Maruti Suzuki and LAVA spending so much on a reality show by increasing the jackpot prize money to Rs.7 crore never thought about making use of the major portion of amount for a noble cause.  And as per guidelines of Reserve Bank of India, Bank cheque leaves should not wasted in any manner.  Whereas Amitabh Bachchan regularly issue cheques and then waste that leave before issuing another cheque for the winner.  Such wastage should go to the benefit to the poor and downtrodden people in our country.  Whether Amitabh and Sony TV producers pay heed to this fact.

It is time to expand the radius of these Metro cities beyond and have a twin city concept. We look at Mumbai as an example.
Mumbai is lauded as the commercial capital of India. We praise Mumbai’s resilience; it’s never say die attitude and the famous Mumbai spirit. A cluster of 7 islands deemed to be throwaway dowry, chosen by East India Company to be developed for logistical reasons, causing hundreds to migrate to the city. First there was the tram, then the famous Mumbai local and BEST buses…now it’s the Metro. Judging by all this, Mumbai is on the fast track to becoming the commercial hub of India…right?? Wrong…I may not win many fans here for saying this, but Mumbai is the commercial capital of India, because currently we don’t have any other option. A saying goes, “Some are born great, and some have greatness thrust upon them” Mumbai falls in the latter category.

There are many 2 tier cities developing and once these cities take a strong hold, Mumbai will loose its status as the commercial hub. For Mumbai to become the commercial hub, it has to undergo a lot of changes. I enlist some of them here:

Infrastructure: Admit it or not, Mumbai infrastructure is definitely not world class. It may be better compared to ill-connected Delhi or slow moving Kolkota, but certainly cannot match the class of Tokyo or New York. Why, Mumbai’s infrastructure cannot even stand shoulder to shoulder with China’s well connected roads and bullet trains. Our trains are overcrowded, late the minute monsoon hits us, and motorists have a tough time trying to locate the road amidst potholes. Throw in some flood and traffic jam, and the perfect Mumbai Monsoon scene is ready for media to glorify.

Tier-II cities: Mumbai has to be able to compete with the tier two cities now developing. Navi-Mumbai, Mumbai’s satellite city, itself, is giving Mumbai a run for its money. The satellite city is home to many IT parks and head office of various corporates. Same is true for Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and more recently Noida and Pune. These 2ndrung cities have the advantage of being better planned and equipped with better infrastructure, lesser population, tax breaks etc. Mumbai, on the other hand is crowded, expensive and polluted.

Cosmopolitan Outlook: Mumbai is, whatever it is due to the contribution of immigrants and localites alike, until Mumbai’s politicos admit this fact and accept immigrants as a part of Mumbai, without forcing them to blend in or lose their individuality, Mumbai will not gain the status of a commercial hub.

Terror Threat: Even though Mumbai’s lauded as a business centre, the recent 26/11 terror attacks tells a different story. No commercial capital of a country would be so ill equipped as to not be able to detect and prevent such attacks on time. While some may argue that Manhattan was a victim of 9/11, I point out that Mumbai has been a soft target since times immemorial. Terror has sneaked up on us not once, like our US counterpart, but thrice…1992 riots, 2006 blasts and 2008 attacks; all caught Mumbai unawares.

In short, for Mumbai to truly become India’s commercial hub, the quality of life, quality of infrastructure, quality of security and attitude—all need improvement.
ZUBIN KEPT THE AUDIENCE SPELLBOUND

Zubin Mehta not only won the hearts of the Kashmirs audience but mesmerised them with his weaved magic with his orchestra.  A strong 2000 well behaved audience watched in rapt attention and spell bound concentration.  Sopori's troop of 17 Indian musicians comprised of 15 Kashmiri artists and two from Delhi gave music of the century.  I still remember an action in Srinagar when West Indies team toured India in 1983 and played a match against the Indian outfit.  At that time the spectators were cheering when Indian wickets fell but now Zubin won the hearts and made it a paradise on earth.  Renowned conductor Zubin Mehta performed before a jam packed audience in the Shalimar Gardens on the banks of Dal Lake and symponotised his magic amid tight security.  Holding his baton, the Mumbai born opera music conductor gave a performance of his life and made the dream come true.  It was indeed a treat to hear well timed music as music has no language.
